Universal Music Group Ushers In Nigerian Star, Tiwa Savage

The signing of Tiwa Savage to this record label was briefly followed by the opening of a new branch of the Universal Music Group in Nigeria. She has been a prosperous individual, not only in the music sector but also when it comes to fashion, film (For Colored Girls and Shuga Season 3) and television. She is also an entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Multiple awards-winning Tiwa Savage has bidden her former Record Label, Mavin Records, goodbye as she signs a new contract with Universal Music Group (UMG) (Alake,2019). UMG will henceforth release Tiwa’s music in over sixty countries globally making her it attract a larger audience. Efe Ogbeni and Vannessa Amadi Ogbonna of Regime Music Societe and VA PR respectively will become her new executive producers. She is the first female Nigerian to be signed to the record label. The latter music label has been making contacts with Africa for the last couple of months.

Her former boss, Don Jazzy from Nigeria, shared in the joy with her by congratulating her and appreciating her for the good job she had been doing during her seven years at Mavin Records. Here is what he had to say to her:

“Our darling Tiwatope. We at Mavin would like to say a very big thank you for being such an inspiration to all of us, a friend, a sister. It’s been an epic journey with you and we are very proud of what we have achieved together. As you start this new chapter in your life we want you to know that we are solidly behind you and can’t wait for the world to see what we have always believed you can be. Your jersey as the First Lady of Mavin will forever be yours as we do not intend to fill that position with anyone else. We love you from the bottom of the heart and pray GOD’s blessings to continue to follow you. Amennnn.”

Besides being the first African lady to sell out London’s IndigO2, she became the first female to win an award in the Best African Act category of MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) (Eggertsen,2019). Vogue Magazine US feature Tiwa Savage in their list of Top one hundred Inspirational women in Fashion in the World while Vogue Magazine Britain termed her as one of the ten women in the world who is transforming the universal music image

She was also chosen by English Chris Martin to do a live performance alongside big names such as Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, and Jay Z at the Global Citizen Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa (Stassen,2019). This event was held to commemorate a century after the birth of the legendary Nelson Mandela where there was a crowd of energetic seventy thousand people was in attendance. This was not the only instance when she performed on the same venue with Jay Z and other international artists since the same happened in 2017 at Jay-Z’s Made In America Festival in Philadelphia, United States.

She is one of the most followed women on social media in Africa. She also became the first female Pepsi Brand Ambassador and has signed endorsement deals with other worldwide brands such as Nike, Star Beer, MTN and MegaGrowth Hair. Savage is expected to make appearances in a variety of international festivals including AfroPunk Festival in Paris, France, Oh My! Festival in Amsterdam and the Wireless Festival in the United Kingdom. Tiwa also mentioned that this is a dream come true for her and it is such an honor to be part of the group.


She will be in the same record label with renowned artists such as Drake, Shawn Mendes, Lady Gaga, J Balvin, The Beatles, the Korean musical girl group Blackpink among others. They all shared through their official Instagram page that they are very excited to usher in the new Nigerian signee to the label.
